Advisory Highlight: Retirement Isn’t a Number, It’s an Adaptable System
- Real retirements unfold in chapters. The strongest plans are built to evolve with you, not to predict every twist in advance.
- Cash flow, investments, asset structure, and risk all interact. The strength of any plan comes from how those pieces work in concert.
- Our Retirement VIEW framework brings those four dimensions into one view, so plans can adapt as life keeps changing.
Market Review
- A flare-up in the Middle East effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz and sent Brent crude up roughly 63% in March, the largest monthly move in four decades.
- U.S. equities pulled back as mega-cap software gave back about 23% by late February. Value (+1.3%) outpaced growth (-8.4%) for the first time in a while.
- Canada (+3.9%), Japan (+3.6%), and the U.K. (+2.4%) all finished higher. In an increasingly multi-polar world, leadership isn’t sitting in one region anymore.
Investment Theme: AI and the Diffusion Phase
- 25% of S&P 500 companies cited a quantifiable AI benefit in Q1, up from 13% ayear ago. In Financials alone, that figure tripled.
- The opportunity has broadened beyond GPUs. Agentic AI is pulling spending into CPUs, memory, networking, and the rest of the infrastructure stack.
- We hold positions across multiple layers of the AI value chain, including the build-out leaders and quality franchises that should benefit from productivity gains over time.
Portfolio Highlights
- Real assets, infrastructure, and tail-risk hedging behaved exactly the way they’re meant to during the Q1 volatility.
- We continue to favour businesses with real pricing power and durable free cash flow. Those are the companies best positioned to defend margins when costs are rising.
- We didn’t change our long-term positioning based on one quarter’s headlines. We rebalanced, leaned into quality, and kept our lines of defence in place so clients can stay invested through the noise.
